I joined Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists in 2016 simply because I wanted to test myself and to find out what kind of a rider I really was; plus there were some aspects of my riding that I was not too happy with I thought I could do better. I quickly discovered that all of the members were welcoming, friendly and hugely enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge. My skills quickly improved and thanks to their expert tuition I soon passed my Advanced Test. I’m riding 16,000 miles a year now. I feel more confident and I’m loving it more than ever thanks to the guys at Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists!

I passed my bike test in January 2015, but as I was told when I passed my car test (some years earlier), passing the test is when you start learning on the road, not when you stop. This is particularly true on a motorbike where you are not cocooned by roll-bars and airbags and the thing likely to make the biggest difference to your safety is your own skills on the road. With this in mind, I decided I would also set a challenge for myself to pass the IAM Advanced Test, which I did in September 2015. Now, in March 2018, I have ridden almost 40,000 miles since passing my test, at all times of day and night and in all kinds of weather conditions. Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists enabled me to join (and learn from) a group of extremely supportive bikers who are significantly more experienced than me. The regular ride-outs are fun, well-organised and lacking in typical machismo behaviour. I would encourage other riders to complete the advanced test whether you’ve been riding for years, or whether you are new to it. There is always something more to learn and what price can you put on investing in the most significant safety feature on your bike – yourself.

The Master Program is for Advanced Riders who want to take their skills to the highest possible level. The mentoring was first class, the training exacting and intense. My Advanced Rider skills were pushed and developed throughout every session. The test was 90 minutes on roads I didn’t know; technical minor roads, busy motorway and rush hour traffic through the centre of Doncaster. I was delighted to be awarded a pass with distinction. If like me you are looking to improve observation and awareness, and apply this to being a more progressive and safer rider, then the Master Program is for you.
